Directed by Brady Corbet, The Brutalist spans 30 years in the life of Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (played by Adrien Brody), a Holocaust survivor who moves to America for a better life.
Much of the film’s dialogue is in Hungarian — one of the most difficult languages to pronounce. While Brody has Hungarian roots (his mother is a Hungarian refugee who emigrated to the US in 1956), mastering the accent was still challenging.
The filmmakers used the AI technology of Ukrainian startup Respeecher to make the dialogue sound authentic to native Hungarian speakers. Film editor Dávid Jancsó discussed this in an interview with RedShark.
Brody and co-star Felicity Jones (who plays Tóth’s wife) were closely involved in the process, which began with recording their voices. Jancsó also contributed his own voice to help train the AI model for the specific dialect needs of the film.
